"Match Point" DVD
I watched the movie "Match Point"(2005) on DVD again last weekend during a getaway trip. This is an excellent movie, and is on my top list of favourite movies already. In addition to an excellent plot and soul wrenching moral struggle, the film also includes some really "pretty faces", amongst them Scarlett Johannson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers: the actor delivered one of his finest performances to date when he appeared in writer-director Woody Allen's serious-minded morality drama "Match Point" (2005), playing a social-climbing tennis pro in London who would "rather be lucky than good" but finds his comfortable, status-granting marriage to a doting wife (Emily Mortimer) imperiled by his torrid affair with a sensual but demanding American actress (Scarlett Johannson).
What draws me to the film is the central theme of hoping to grow and excel in social arena, when a person reaches a certain age, he's expected to be "somewhere". A short cut would be to have influential parents or relatives that can give your career a boost, or wealthy family background that can allow you to pursue your dream career not having to worry about the aspect of financial rewards.
In the movie, Chris Wilson is a poor kid who was a pro-tennis player but is not good enough to make a significant name. So he quits and starts climbing the normal career ladder, by starting at the bottom. By luck he meets Chloe, the daughter of a wealthy British upper-class family. This is his short cut in life, soon the father-in-law starts him at a high position, Chris's career really takes off with the boost. Money and power soon follows. A quote from the movie: "I am getting used to a certain life style..." It's certainly a very difficult transition to go back to poverty and the prospect of losing everything he already had would be devastating. Thus he had the moral choice of staying in the slightly boring marriage with Chloe or go after the very attractive American actress Nola. After all, not everybody can be the prince of Monaco, both having power/wealth and the beautiful actress Grace Kelly. Well, maybe he can only because he's the one with the power to begin with. I mean, some times you just can't have it both. Look at the example of King Edward VIII. Now that's a modern day Cinderella story, but still, he had to give up his title of King.... I would certainly hope that love story had a wonderful ending.
