late July - late Aug bills

I added up everything twice, and the total is:

$297.56 for food/grocery/restaurants

-  so 297.56 /2 = 148.78
- $7.45 amazon brush liquid
- $5.77 amazon Neutrogena cream
- $22.93  Walmart + Neutrogena cream +2 face wash

148.78 + 7.45 + 5.77 + 22.93 = 184.93

Amazon Student Prime membership re-instate request

Hello Angel, or other members of the Amazon Prime dept:

This is Sheila Xu, and my regular Amazon.com log in acct is "sheila022@gmail.com".  I recently received a notice that terminated my still active student membership.

I went through a long phone conversation with your customer rep today regarding the recent accidental termination of my student prime membership. There seemed to be a lot of confusion regarding my Amazon Student Prime membership. To ease the confusion, one representative, I think her name is "Florida", told me to associate the account with my current student email address.

I would like to associate "sheila022@gmail.com" amazon account with "sheilaxu@fas.harvard.edu", which is the email acct I am contacting you from right now. And please re-instate my student prime membership back until when it expires in 2012. I have become an Amazon user because of the convenience it offers, and was considering the paid membership in the future when my free trial ends.

Please verify that "sheilaxu@fas.harvard.edu" is ONLY associated with this "sheila022@gmail.com" account so there's no more confusion from now on, and the termination date of my free student prime trial..

If there's any further question, please email me back at "sheila022@gmail.com" or
"sheilaxu@fas.harvard.edu".

Sincerely,

Fwd: Leading Across Style Differences

Leading Across Style Differences

Understanding style differences is essential for good leadership. This article provides some tips for understanding and working with different styles.

There comes a time in the life of every leader when they realize just how very different people are from one another. We all share common ground to be sure, but the way each person shows up in the world is unique. During the past century, many assessments have been developed to take a snapshot of the interior landscape of the human being, to bring light to these differences. These include style and typing tools like the Meyers-Briggs, DiSC, TKI, Enneagram, and many others. All of these provide insight into the human psyche and patterns of personality and behavior. They give us a language and a framework to talk about how we are different, and how we can navigate these differences more successfully, and less painfully.

Learning to work with differences--to value them and capitalize on them--is at the heart of what leaders must do. Here are some key things to remember when you are confronted with differences that are hard to take:

(1) Assume good intentions. It's easy to confuse style differences with bad intentions. Often when someone approaches the world in a very different way than we do, we view these differences as signs that the person is just a trouble maker. Obviously, they are trying to cause us grief. They are difficult, hard to work with, hard to take. They need to change, so that all the people around them won't have to suffer with their unpleasant qualities.

While in some cases this may all be true, more often the person simply has a very different way of being in the world than we do. And because they are so different, we find them difficult to take. It's harder for us to get our needs met in relationship with them, because of how they are, and how we are.

(2) In tough relationships, look at style differences. If you have a challenging relationship at work, look for signs of style differences. If you let go of the idea that the other person has bad intentions, how else could you explain their challenging behavior or communication? Consider these common, challenging style combinations:

One of you is direct, competitive, fast moving and comfortable with change and conflict; while the other is steady, focused on harmonious relationships, and likes to stick with the tried and true.

One of you is quiet, data-oriented, cautious, likes working alone, and doesn't want personal relationships at work; while the other is outgoing, "big picture," loves teamwork, and wants to be everyone's friend.

One of you needs to talk, the other needs to act.

Both of you like to be in control, and to win.

One of you likes to nail things down, the other likes to leave things open-ended.

One of you thinks out loud, the other just shares the outcome of their internal thought process.

Any of these combinations can lead to problems. Once we have the insight that the "problem" is really a difference of styles, we can take steps to make things easier.

(3) Take a step towards their style. Once you determine the nature of the style differences, think about what little steps you might take to accomodate the other person's style. For example, if they communicate in a brief, direct way, try being more brief and direct with them. If they seem to value personal connection, spend a little more time listening, and talking about your personal life. If they seem uncomfortable with change, give them a little more time and space to think over new proposals. If they are highly focused on details, show your appreciation for how their thoroughness contributes to quality, and good decisions. You don't have to become just like them, but if you make a small effort to accomodate their style, they will notice and appreciate it, and it will make things smoother.

(4) Ask them to take a step towards your style. It's also very reasonable for you to let them know what you need from them. If you need more brevity, ask for it! Let them know you want a 1-page report with short bullets, not a 10-pager. If you work better when you can walk around and touch base with people throughout the day, ask them to humor you and to give you a few minutes. If you deeply value personal relationships at work, tell people how supportive and helpful that is for you. And if you yourself have a need for greater detail, ask for it. Don't expect the people around you to become just like you. Instead, be satisfied if they make any small moves to help accomodate your style. The changes may feel small, but they probably represent a real effort.

(5) Sometimes, style really is not the problem. Sometimes people need to be fired because they are poor performers. Sometimes people behave in unethical ways. Sometimes people really do hurt other people to get ahead, or get what they want. These are not style issues. For people who are more aware of stylistic differences, there can be a temptation to believe that every behavior is okay, because they simply reflect different ways of being. But in organizations, not every behavior is okay. People have to do their jobs, achieve their goals, and adhere to some basic norms around responsibility and respectfulness. There is a danger in thinking that everything can be attributed to and resolved through style. Some issues are not fundamentally style issues. Learn to distinguish these and deal with them head-on.

Try making some small moves in the arena of style in the coming week. What are some key style differences you notice in your most challenging relationship? What are some easy ways you can make an accomodation, or request one, to help bridge a style gap?

FWD: Al-Gebra latest threat

FWD from a friend: Al-Gebra latest threat

'There are three sides to every triangle'.

Dateline: Tuesday, January 19, 2010

from the Internet

A teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

'"Al-Gebra is a problem for us," the Attorney General said. "They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values." They use secret code names like 'X' and 'Y' and refer to themselves as "unknowns", but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.

As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'There are 3 sides to every triangle'.

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Obama said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes." White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the President. It is believed that the Nobel Prize for Physics will follow.

****

What follows is an extremely graphic account from a survivor of Al-Gebra indoctrination tactics. Reader discretion is advised.

Yes, I concur that this is a profound and dangerous form of terrorism. I was subjected to Al-Gebra torture four times and barely survived. It was the repeated demands to "solve for 'x'" that nearly drove me irretrievably mad. I bear the invisible scars of the mental torture.

As they screamed "three sides... three sides... three sides to the triangle... Say it! Three sides" I kept trying to explain that there are really four sides to a triangle (three sides and the base). They accused me of being a fraction of the Plane Geometry movement, even as they demanded that I admit to "three sides"...

Send the Al-Gebra practitioners to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for the inhumane treatment of student prisoners!!!

Santa Claus Editorial

Most of you know of the eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon who wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun and the response in an unsigned editorial on September 21, 1897. It has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial.

Recently reading an excerpt reminded me that Santa Claus doesn’t really come down the chimney with toys at all. Rather he magically appears in our homes and hearts. Please enjoy the newsman’s partial response to Virginia. And, keep a watch out for Santa’s very large bag of generosity, kindness and childlike awe on Christmas morn.

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be a dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

He lives and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.”

Happy Holidays to you and yours,

CA vs. CT

It's getting cold, the leaves have fallen, and the cool temperate weather I initially experienced upon arrival will soon morph into an unforgiving harsh winter... Knowing it's upon the heels, I am anticipating the first fall of snow of the winter of 2009 here in CT.

I woke up dreaming I was going for a bike ride on the trail to Intel a few days ago. It took me a minute or two before I realised that I was not in my own bed and this is not my master bedroom in Santa Clara either.

I can still recall the vivid conversation I was having in my dreams with my CA friends, telling them that I will be back in no less than 6 weeks, and actually believing that I'd be able to live a life straddling bi-coastal..

now naive, now I am looking at going "home" to CA in some unknown future time..

"Try to Remember the kind of September"

TRY TO REMEMBER Lyrics

Music: Harvey Schmidt
Lyrics: Tom Jones
Book: Tom Jones
Premiere: Tuesday, May 3, 1960

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
The fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December, our hearts should remember
And follow.

"No Discipline"

Ron Arad: No Discipline

August 2, 2009–October 19, 2009 @ the New York MOMA

View Exhibition Site »

Among the most influential designers of our time, Ron Arad (Israeli, b. 1951) stands out for his daredevil curiosity about technology and materials and for the versatile nature of his work. Trained at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and at London's Architectural Association, Arad has produced an outstanding array of innovative objects over the past twenty-five years, from almost unlimited series of objects to carbon fiber armchairs and polyurethane bottle racks. He has also designed memorable spaces, some plastic and tactile, others ethereal and digital. This exhibition will be the first major retrospective of Arad's design work in the United States.

Arad relies on the computer and its rapid manufacturing capabilities as much as he relies on the soldering apparatus in his metal workshop. His beautiful furniture can even receive and display SMS and Bluetooth messages from mobile phones and Palm Pilots. Idiosyncratic and surprising, and also very beautiful, Arad's designs communicate the joy of invention, pleasure and humor, and pride in the display of their technical and constructive skills. The exhibition will open in Paris in the fall of 2009.

The exhibition is organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Musée national d'art moderne/Centre de création industrielle, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
