Hard Conversations

A while ago my car got broken into, TWICE within the same week. The M.O. being similar (crack passenger side window) and both times occurred when I parked my car out front on a Sunday night.

The first time, I just blamed myself for being careless with leaving the GPS attachment visible on the window (and leaving the GPS unit in the glove compartment), resulting in it got stolen, along with all the attachment accessories. The thief also took quite a few merchandises out of my car since I just came back from a trip to the shopping mall.

However, it's not until the second time that they broke into my car, dislodged my window, cut out my CD player, took my roller blades, tennis rackets, and swimming gear, etc. that totally *ENRAGED* me. This time I didn't hesitate, and drove straight to the police station, insist that they take down the finger prints (yes, the idiots left clear prints on the window). I also proceeded to vow to catch him/her. Thus I went as far as trying to track down the GPS unit on eBay, and narrowed it down to one suspect seller, managed to get in contact and brought the policemen to their door! Now it didn't turn out to be the thief that stole my unit, but that's besides the point. I realized that I am the determined type to protect MY things all the way to the end. Until I've exhausted my resources and detective routes, one has to protect one's own interest, nobody else will put in more effort than you yourself.

Something of more gravity similar happened in my life more recently. I was angry, sad, and upset initially. But now that the "dust has settled" (so to speak), I am determined to no longer run away but face the situation head on. I am not the type to try to "smooth things" over when the situation is so grave, I am mentally preparing myself to face the challenge and deal with it, so that I can move on with my life, and start the healing process.

It's been some time since I've calmed down and reflected on the whole situation. I know objectively what had happened and what the mentalities involved were. I know where everyone stands and what their current mentality is. However, it's clear in my mind that the situation is severe enough that I don't think "smooth it over" will be the right solution. It needs to have a clear cut closure so that everybody can move on.

I have come to the realization that I am not the type to run away from difficulty, I am more likely to rise to the challenge and figure out a way to deal with it. I only pray that God will give me the strength and the wisdom to handle the aftermath of the situation properly, so that I am just and objective and maintain a cool head.

regrets

Found some great blogsites with people's writing on regrets.

quote: "
Once upon a time, someone told me this: "At the end of the day, a person is not defined by how much success they have, they are only defined by how many regrets they have." regrets -- missed opportunities -- an accidental wrong turn -- a bad decision, some of those grave enough, are enough to become a life time regret! I don't want to have any such regrets at the end of my days!

Epiphany

this came to me while hiking in the Canadian Rockies, more specifically, on the catwalk near Maligne Canyan in Jasper NP.

f(H) = A / E

A, E, and H are all letters in the word "Epiphany", how poetic is that? =) Arhh, thus the meaning of life ~~ 42 ?

essentials of a relationship

I was driving back to work from a Solaris summer picnic today, when I turned into KCBS when I heard a Lexus radio commercial. One of the catch lines in it was "Some people say that one of the essentials of a healthy relationship is 'compromise'..."

Um. I don't quite like the word 'compromise', especially when it's used in the relationship terms. I think this word carries with it a very passive and involuntary feeling, more like a shrug and "whatever!". I would want to use a more pro-active strategy -- synergy!

Synergy -- Etymology: New Latin synergia, from Greek synergos working together
1 : SYNERGISM; broadly : combined action or operation
2 : a mutually advantageous conjunction or compatibility of distinct business participants or elements (as resources or efforts)

Pooh history

Pooh comprehensive info on Wikipedia:

Winnie-the-Pooh, commonly shortened to Pooh and once referred to as Edward Bear, is a fictional bear created by A. A. Milne. He appears in the books Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included several poems about Winnie-the-Pooh in the children’s poetry books When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six. All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard.

The hyphens in the character's name were later dropped when The Walt Disney Company adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh featurettes which became one of the company's most successful franchises worldwide.

The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, notably including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times Bestseller List, and is the only book in Latin ever to have been featured therein.

more things stolen!!

I am going to start to take a full inventory of the items in my car,
apparently the thief also took 3 sets of hair styling curling irons that I just purchased, and two massagers, these items were all new and in a bag in the back seat, now I will have to recall what else was in that bag!

I am quite upset! @_@!

GPS STOLEN!!

Arrhh!! Someone came into my car and stole my GPS system! This occurred at the mall, beware that thieves are lurking around near holidays and prying on unsuspecting general mass.

I can't believe this! I feel so violated, as one's car is as personal and private as one's house... Not to mention the loss of the GPS system, which was so convenient to rely on for guidance in the past 9 months for me..

Wanderlust

The Wanderlust travel journal makes me happy. I have been wanting this since 2-3 years ago, and at some point it was out of stock at the store. I was very happy to see it on the shelf again during a random browsing the other day at Border's (one of my favourite places!!).

I am going to write all my future travel logs in it... it makes me so happy (yes, for the 3rd time using the word "happy") .. ^_^

no 'hunny' for Pooh?!

Pooh bear is consistently irritated by the fact that every time it goes to the cafeteria for a coffee/mocha/hot chocolate servings, it does not see those cute bear shaped plastic bottles of honey. Instead, there is a stock pile of *tiny* rectangular packagings, that because they only have a tablespoon of honey inside, it usually takes one standing there for a full 2-3 min. in order for the thick amber droplets to detach themselves and dive into the cup!!

I miss those "bear" honey bottles, save on all these plastic packaging and give me some real droplets of HUNNY!!!

[[ it gets under my skin so much that I accidentally typed "bear hunny bottle" into the Gsearch engine, Doh! of course the search results are a bit off centered! Aiya.... (wipe face, gotta concentrate, FOCUS! ]]

Yao Ming

What's in a name?

Yao Ming (Chinese: 姚明; Hanyu Pinyin: Yao Ming)

I heard a short clip about Yao Ming this morning on NPR, all of a sudden, I had a realization. Hey, they went according to Asian rule and said his last name first!

Have you ever noticed that we have to switch Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc Asian names around for the western society? Names become mangled, and in actors or actresses I have to mentally do a "switch around" before I say it in English vs. talking to friends in Chinese. It's just so awkward! That's starting to change a bit, now we have "Zhang ZhiYi" and "Yao Ming".

Have you ever noticed that when you fill out forms, or when the computer does a search and the listing is always LastName, FirstName? well, I think the ordering of the names shows a fundamental difference in mentality between the East and the West.

Eastern world values family connection and thus one is identified more as being a part of a clan, thus the family name takes the uttermost importance. There are old sayings about "glory for the family clan", "come back to benefit the whole local community", etc.

Western world is all about individualism, self-importance, thus the first name takes precedence, with a few even forgoing their last name, thus severing connections with previous generations and other family heritage, whether it be good or bad.

~~Just my humble 2 cents on this naming thing, I think it totally reflects the difference of family vs. individual value system between the East and the West.
