I met up with a friend who was on the path of becoming a teacher. She shared her experience as a high school teacher in a not so great school district.

Apparently, teaching is no piece of cake, especially for teenagers. That's the thing she didn't anticipate initially because given our culture background, it's a given that teachers receive respect and honor. Not so in this culture, the demographics of her class is very diverse, and she had to deal with extra lesson preparation, different levels of students, as well as their personalities.

My take on this is, if I am teaching you something, it's your responsibility to study the material and internalize the understanding. A teacher's responsibility is not the same as counselor or baby sitter, there is already enough information that needs to be conveyed to the students, his/her focus should be on the efficiency and efficacy of the content delivery. That separation from attitude monitoring alone will alleviate the teacher's load and allow them to give more quality time to the actual teaching. School standards will then go up...

sigh, I just don't get it, what were her students thinking?
