X * 0.5 + 7 = ??
Someone told me this last night: guys can date any girl that's half their age + 7.
I have never heard of this rule before, so I thought of the obvious question: WHY 7?!
Is it because it's the magical number used in the Bible? Is it some magical constant? Does it exhibit interesting mathematical patterns? then immediately I realized how shrewd whoever that came up with this formula is!
Basically, if you do the math, then one realizes that this guy was working the numbers so it would be justifiable for him to cover the entire age range from 13 to life!

a few of my coworkers came back from TW today, chatting with one of them about the experience, the funniest comment was:
me: not knowing Chinese, did you have a difficult time getting around outside of lab?
Mr. X: I figured out a wonderful formula -- all the good looking girls speak English very well!

x/2 + 7 = min age for the woman
As you can see, this equation favors older men.

the equation "${min_age} = 7 + x/2" is just the first two terms in the Taylor series expansion.
I've always thought that the reason behind this thing was this: Girls tend to be more mature than guys in highschool and maybe in university. So, guys compensate by dating younger women. And if she's sufficiently younger and impressionable, he can get his way with her due to psychological advantage. Hence, the general rule of thumb. And that's why there is no reverse rule. But this is only my personal conjecture.
in my experience
women revert back into girls around 33, +/- 2 yrs
of course my pool is rather limited, drawing on a sample size of the 14 odd I've dated, and the <100 that I know that are at that age.
maybe I just feel like they should be more mature.

"hate the game, not the player" is a commonly used phrase. the reader should not assume that the user of this phrase is a player - that conclusion would be use of poor logic and as we all know, most engineers are very logical.
